The Art of Giclée Prints: A Collector's Guide

Writer: James Otto AllenJames Otto Allen

As a visual artist interested in capturing the beauty of a person or place through oil paintings, I love the idea of my work being accessible to as many people as possible. That's why I decided to offer giclée prints - high-quality reproductions that maintain the integrity of the original artwork while being more affordable than an original painting. But what exactly is a giclée print, and why should you consider adding one to your collection?

What Is a Giclée Print?

A giclée print is a fine art print created using high-resolution digital scans and archival-quality inks. The word "giclée" is derived from the French word meaning "to spray," which refers to the way the ink is applied to the paper or canvas. Unlike standard prints, which can fade over time, giclée prints are designed to last for decades without losing their vibrancy.

Why Choose a Giclée Print?

If you love art but aren’t ready to invest in an original painting, giclée prints offer a great alternative. I have quite a few giclée prints from the National Gallery here in London, since an original Rembrandt is a little out of my price range. Here’s why they’re worth considering:

Museum-Quality Reproduction – Every detail, from brushstrokes to colour transitions, is preserved with incredible accuracy.

Archival Longevity – Giclée prints are made with fade-resistant inks, ensuring they last 75-100+ years with proper care.

Affordable Art – They allow collectors to own beautiful, high-quality art at a fraction of the cost of an original.

Versatile Display Options – Available in different sizes and finishes (paper or canvas), giclée prints fit seamlessly into any space.

How Are My Giclée Prints Made?

I work with professional fine art printers to ensure each piece meets the highest standards. Here’s the process:

  1. High-Resolution Scanning – My original painting is scanned in ultra-high detail to capture the brush strokes.

  2. Colour Matching & Proofing – Colours are carefully compared to the original to ensure colour accuracy.

  3. Printing on Archival Paper or Canvas – I use heavyweight, acid-free hahnemühle German Etching paper for a luxurious finish.

  4. Certificate of Authenticiy & Packaged with Care – Each print comes with a certificate of authenticity digitally signed by me, carefully packed, and shipped to your door.

How to Care for Your Giclée Print

To keep your print looking as vibrant as the day you receive it:

  • Frame it under UV-protective glass for extra longevity.

  • Keep it away from direct sunlight and humidity.
