How to Set Up Figures in Perspective
How to set up figures in perspective
Placing several figures at different distances in a scene can be tricky. As figures move further away, we need to know how to set up figures in perspective. They need to become smaller in a way that remains consistent with the perspective of the environment.
In this short demo, I use a simple method inspired by Andrew Loomis to quickly establish figures at different distances using the horizon line and perspective lines.
This is intended as a quick gestural setup rather than a precise construction method. I'm not building each figure as a three-dimensional box or fully projecting its proportions in perspective. Instead, the aim is to establish believable scale and placement quickly before developing the figures further.
Quick takeaway
When placing figures in perspective, ask yourself:
Where is the horizon line?
How does each figure relate to the eye level?
Are the figures getting smaller consistently as they move further away?
Establish the perspective and scale first, then develop the figures on top of that framework.
