How to Draw a Head (A Simple Construction Method)

Start with the structure

One of the biggest mistakes when drawing a head is jumping straight to the facial features. Instead, try thinking of the head as a simple three-dimensional form that can be turned and viewed from any angle.

Starting with the larger masses makes it much easier to place the eyes, nose and mouth later, while also helping the head feel solid and believable. Once the construction is working, the features become much easier to organise.

Whether you're drawing portraits or designing characters, spending a little time on construction will almost always lead to a stronger result.

Quick takeaway

Before adding the features, ask yourself:

  • Does the head feel solid in three dimensions?

  • Have I established the main masses first?

  • Are the facial features sitting on the construction rather than replacing it?

Strong construction is the foundation of convincing heads.
