Drawing Foundations: From Observation to Construction

Overview

Course Overview Learn how to see and draw accurately — even if you’re a complete beginner. In this course, we’ll start with simple, confidence-building observational exercises and gradually move toward drawing believable 3D forms. You’ll learn to combine traditional sight-size and comparative measuring techniques with constructive drawing — the ability to think in forms and draw what you imagine. Each lesson builds on the previous one, so by the end, you’ll be able to draw from photos or simple objects with a clear sense of proportion, light, and space. Who this course is for: Beginners or returning artists who want to finally understand how to draw realistically and confidently. No previous drawing experience required. By the end of this course, you’ll be able to: - Draw accurately from flat images or simple 3D objects - Understand how to measure and compare proportions by eye - Construct forms in perspective and apply light logically - Combine observational accuracy with creative construction - Approach any subject with confidence and a clear drawing process

A very talented painter and most knowledgeable teacher who took great care to fully understand where I have got to in my learning and who produced a number of interesting options regarding how the lessons might proceed. I believe that I am extremely fortunate to have James as a tutor and am very excited about the lessons ahead of us.

James has a passion and knowledge for art that is not only immense but also infectious. He makes the complexities of drawing and painting not only accessible but enticing by unveiling the mystery and history of techniques needed to make meaningful progress .
